Everyone wants to stand out, but in a good way. They want to have a purpose in the world and feel like they have a fit. These people just want to feel normal and belong to a group. People who look вЂњdifferentвЂќ feel like they are being put into a separate category from others and constantly feel like they are being treated differently. This should not be the case because everyone should feel equal and like they belong in this world. This gets people to think that they need to change something about themselves to please others. In our society today, people hold certain standards for what people should look like. So, if we combine the underlying theme, anyone can perform acts of evil, Janet TylerвЂ™s verbal cue to segregation and the fact that the episode aired during a peak in racial segregation, not the Holocaust We can see Rod Serling wanted the viewers of The Eye of the Beholder to realize how similar Americans were acting to their enemies of the recent past, the Nazis. She says, вЂњPeople of my kind? Congregated? No, you mean segregated!вЂќ Second, Janet Tyler mentions segregation during her tantrum with the doctor.

The show first appeared 14 years after World War II ended, so any references to the second world war would most likely have appeared in season one. ItвЂ™s the subtleties of the episode, some not even written, that make this episode about AmericaвЂ™s problem.ДЇirst, this episode was aired in November of 1960, the Holocaust ended in 1945. But, the episode just fulfills the basic definition of segregation, not the struggle of African Americans versus racist whites after the Civil War in America. A вЂњsuperiorвЂќ group of people want another group of people out of their area. With a quick skim of the episode, itвЂ™s not hard to see how segregation fits in the episode. This switching of roles creates the underlying theme of the episode, anyone can perform acts of evil. However, in SerlingвЂ™s creation it was the pig-humans (the Polish and the Jews) who were concentrating the ugly blue eyed and blonde people like Janet Tyler. Hitler and his followers targeted these people because they did not align with the idea that the perfect person is a blue eyed blonde, so they tried to eliminate them.

As we all know, it was the Polish, the Jews and others who were attacked by the Nazis. This made fun of their Kosher beliefs and played with the idea that pigs were considered unclean animals.

This small detail is the most important aspect of the episode.ДЄ common slanderous term or depiction for Polish people and Jews during the time of the Holocaust was a pig. But, it is later revealed that she is quite beautiful, and the rest of the world is just filled with ugly pig-humans. Throughout most of the episode the viewer believes Janet Tyler is beyond ugly. Serling used the American peopleвЂ™s already negative opinion about Nazis and Hitler to make a call to action against racism in the United States.ДЄlthough these elements just seem like simple references to the Holocaust, itвЂ™s how Serling executes the story that changes who the episode is provoking. The leader of the fictitious country is a reference to Hitler, the doctor not wanting to not force Janet Tyler into the special congregation is a portrayal of people hiding Jews during the Holocaust, and the contents of the fictitious leaderвЂ™s speech is a rewording of HitlerвЂ™s Aryan Race ideology. The Eye of the Beholder episode of The Twilight Zone was a call to action against segregation in America and used the Holocaust as its support.ДЄlthough this episode contains numerous references to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, Rod Serling did not directly make negative comments about the injustices.
